In addition to TCP5, we are happy to announce the following teaching at IBA:
Shamatha-Vipashyana based on the Four Elements:
10-Day Retreat with Thomas Dhammadipa
Dates: September 14 to 23, 2024
The four elements meditation is a profound practice of mindfulness and insight, based on the contemplative exploration of the characteristics of the elements of earth, water, fire, and air in one’s own body. It opens the door to deep insight into the nature of the body and the world of our experience. This retreat will combine instructions for shamatha, or calm abiding, with the cultivation of the insight of vipashyana based on the topic of the four elements.
This analytical-meditative approach was systematized in the Visuddhimagga by Buddhaghosa and is extensively taught in the Abhidhamma based forest tradition of Burma, by teachers such as Pa Auk Sayadaw. Thomas Dhammadipa trained extensively under this master and has widely taught this practice for many years.
