Sat 18 May teaching – Ven Kunsang Choephel – ‘Shamatha Meditation’

Ven Kunsang Choephel will give a free teaching on ‘Shamatha Meditation’ at IBA on Sat 18 May. The Sanskrit word Shamatha, (calm abiding), refers to a state of mind which is characterised by the stabilisation of attention on an internal object of observation, conjoined with the calming of external distractions to the mind. Shamatha is an essential basis for training one’s mind in the generation of Vipashyana (penetrative insight), a true, analytical insight into the more profound aspects of the chosen object, such as its emptiness or its ultimate nature. These two methods of meditation Shamatha, (calm abiding) and Vipashyana (penetrative insight) are the meditative foundations for attaining a profound realisation of the ultimate nature of mind and phenomena. The teaching is in English and all are welcome. Arrive at 9am for tea.
